Chinese passenger car manufacturers' fail to make ground in Europe

Market share of Chinese car makers in Europe's new car market

Chinese passenger cars continue to account for only a small share of the West European new passenger car market, according to the latest European Electric Car Study published by Schmidt Automotive Research each month

Focusing on a stagnating BEV market in 2024, where Chinese brands account for every tenth new model entering the region in the opening half of the year, that number was diluted down to just 3.4% during this year's second quarter across the total market, including all drivetrains, with little progress spotted, or just 3.1% during the opening half of the year.

Meanwhile, Japanese brands accounted for 13.4% of the market, and Korean brands 7.9%.

As global shipping logistical breaks are slowly eased as more PCTC vessels enter the market, expected to be reflected in deflationary charter prices over the next quarters, China's headaches don't ease!

Just as the possibility arrives to lower prices and increase volumes – assisting domestic capacity utilisation rates – provisional tariffs put in place by the European Commission, which could be implemented by early November, assuming not enough European Council oppose it, would make sudden price falls more difficult and put the breaks on Chinese manufacturers plans to step on the gas and begin penetrating the region.

The competitive playfield is also set to increase from 2025 as more affordable models from Western incumbents OEMs enter the stage to meet a tougher regulatory environment.◼︎︎
