BMW Group continues to see EU CO2 fleet averages emissions tumble in 2024

BMW Group proved that a fall in its EU CO2 fleet emissions targets was entirely possible, and its 2025 obligations were very much on target.

In 2024, it over-achieved its obligatory EU (inc. Norway/Iceland) CO2 fleet target by over 30g/km, seeing its annual level fall below 100g/km for the first time. The German manufacturer's 2020-2024 target was adjusted upwards given the legislation allowing more flexibility to OEMs with higher fleet weights resulting in the 118g/km WLTP average target being inflated upwards, making the target more achievable.

This changes from 2025, however, where OEMs with above average fleet mass weights will have tougher targets to meet and consequently below the 93.6g/km average.

However, premium OEMs are those most likely to meet so-called adjustment mechanism credits available where 5g/km is banked for OEMs that achieve at least 30% ZLEV (<50g/km models) mix of their total new passenger car registration fleet mix, bringing their target back above the 93.6g/km average.

426,494 BMW Group BEV vehicles were delivered globally during 2024, an increase of 17% over 2023.

The Group have delivered over 1.5mn BEVs cumulatively since they introduced the i3 in 2013.

The year 2025 will mark the debut of their Neue Klasse BEV architecture, which will add momentum to their BEV portfolio with the first model badged IX3 replacing the Chinese-made model with a Hungarian-made model which will have the added advantage of navigating EU BEV anti-subsidy tariffs that have been in place since November 2024.
