02/2025: Strong European BEV passenger car 2025 forecast remains despite regulatory changes
02/2025: Strong European BEV passenger car 2025 forecast remains despite regulatory changes
Edition No. 02-2025 European Electric Car Study – West European Electric Passenger Car Market Trend Study covering the period January - February 2025
The West European new BEV passenger car market continues to see growth. Penetration increased in line with the regulatory framework in place for 2025. The opening two-month regional BEV share of the total market rose to 18.4%, or 26.4% with PHEVs included, with our forecast of an over 30% total plug-in market remaining in place for 2025, or 21.5% for BEVs only. New smaller sector models starting at or around €25,000, with some Western brands fitting these with cheaper LFP battery chemistry for the first time in Europe, are increasingly and consistently accounting for at least every tenth new model entering the region, thanks to new product launches this year. Genuine under €20,000 European-made models will increasingly make an appearance from 2026 coupled to LFP batteries. Renault Group is leading this development so far with help from their ACDC Chinese venture, which is reducing development times and costs, but they are still seeing higher price premiums, compared to ICE models. However, inversely, higher safety standards (GSR II) are increasing costs for ICE models, suggesting that cost-parity is close, as underlined by Volkswagen's CFO Antitz saying the ID.2 model could be the first across the Group to achieve this.
